Lusoconnectionuk has launched an initiative to bring families together and promote healthier lifestyles through its “Family Cooking” sessions. Held every Monday at St. James Church Hall in Pendleton for five weeks from 13 January 2025, this program is led by Ana Julia from Juju Delicacies and focuses on families with children under five years old.
These sessions are much more than a cooking class—they are a community project to encourage social interaction and demonstrate to families the importance of balanced nutrition during the crucial early years of childhood development.
A culinary and social adventure
Parents/carers and their little ones embark on a journey to learn how to prepare healthy, traditional Portuguese meals from scratch. Beyond the culinary skills, these sessions allow families to connect, have fun, and embrace the joy of cooking together.
Key learning highlights
Participants benefit from a wide range of learning opportunities, including:
- Understanding the basics: Learn about food hygiene to ensure safe and sanitary cooking practices.
- Cooking smart: Gain insights into the importance of fresh ingredients, and discover how to make meal planning enjoyable and cost-effective.
- Budget-friendly tips: Develop skills to manage food expenses while prioritising healthy eating.
- Children’s engagement: While parents are busy in the kitchen, children are kept entertained with crafts and playtime, making it a family-friendly experience.
Supporting families at home
The initiative doesn’t stop when the session ends. To ensure the knowledge gained translates into practical habits at home, participants receive:
- A healthy recipe book: Packed with ideas to inspire continued healthy cooking.
- Take-home goodies: Tupperware is provided to bring home surplus food, ensuring no meal goes to waste.
- Nutritional information: Educational materials explaining the importance of a balanced diet, focusing on how various nutrients support children’s physical, cognitive, and emotional development.
Why it matters
Good nutrition in the early years is critical for:
- Brain development and growth.
- Building a strong immune system.
- Supporting emotional well-being.
- Maintaining dental health and preventing chronic diseases later in life.
