Celebrating Black History Month with a tribute to Amílcar Cabral

On 19th October, Lusoconnectionuk hosted a vibrant Black History Month celebration at Oasis Academy in Salford, honouring the centenary of Amílcar Cabral’s birth. The event brought together the community for a day of cultural enrichment, education, and entertainment.

The day’s highlight was an inspiring workshop led by Prof. Vitor Barros, a respected researcher from the Institute of Contemporary History at Universidade Nova in Lisbon. Prof. Barros, known for his extensive work on Amílcar Cabral, shared insights into the life and legacy of this influential African revolutionary and anti-colonial leader.

Attendees at the event were also treated to a lively Batuku performance by Crioulas di Salford, showcasing Cape Verde’s traditional music and dance. This energetic display captivated the audience, offering a taste of Cabral’s cultural heritage.

Furthermore, in a nod to contemporary issues, the event featured an upcycled fashion show,  that blended creativity with sustainability. Models strutted down the runway in innovative designs, demonstrating how cultural expression can align with environmental consciousness.

No celebration would be complete without food, and LusoconnectionUK delivered with a spread of traditional delicacies. Guests could taste various dishes, experiencing the flavours of the Portuguese-speaking African nations.

Lisa de Pina, the event organiser and Founder at Lusoconnectionuk, commented, “Our Black History Month event was a beautiful tribute to Amílcar Cabral and a celebration of our rich cultural heritage. It was great seeing our community come together to learn, share, and enjoy the diverse aspects of our history and culture.” The success of this event underscores Lusoconnectionuk’s commitment to fostering community engagement and promoting cultural understanding.

As the organisation grows, it remains dedicated to creating spaces where heritage is celebrated and new connections are forged. This Black History Month celebration honoured the past and looked to the future, inspiring attendees to carry forward the legacy of figures like Amílcar Cabral in their lives and communities.
